Handheld

is the tale of a young girl who is left to suffer at the hands of her mother's fear and paranoia after her father is brutally murdered while away in town. The mother suddenly withdraws herself and her child from all forms of public interaction without explaining to her daughter the cause of her father's disappearance. The girl soon follows in her mother's footsteps as her lack of closure and social isolation send her into an interminable series of nightmares, which in turn causes her to develop an acute fear of the darkness. She creates a plethora of imaginary friends to distract herself from the pain, but they ultimately turn on her, leaving her to become obsessed with the streetlight outside her window, which she believes can save her from the darkness she has so quickly fallen victim to. This is the story of the girl's fate as she runs from her room into the cold and the dark, in a futile attempt to draw near to the only source of light she has access to. But instead of meeting her tragic end under the streetlight, a familiar song and its singer meet her there just as her own light begins to fade, convincing her to pick herself back up and find her way home.
